RELLIK | Ashanti Stool ‘Ancestor's Seat’
Ashanti, Ghana: an Ashanti stool, dyed black (as ‘ancestor seat’).
A small stool in the typical shape of the Ashanti: with a rectangular, arched seat and rectangular baseplate. Four straight supports with sculptural decoration on the sides. In the middle a round, hollow column, with geometrical openwork decoration. The present Ashanti stool was originally made of light-coloured wood. The stool (‘seat of the soul’) is often dyed black when the owner dies. These black stools, called ‘ancestor seats’, are subsequently worshipped with sacrificial offerings. This chair displays some minor age damage, but repairs were undertaken, with the remains of an early original repair.
